CBI urges large companies to fight against tax dodging accusations

The Confederation of British Industry has produced a report which reveals that large corporations are responsible for paying about a quarter of all the tax paid in the UK, in a bid to prove that large businesses pay their share of tax. Small businesses to be hit by planned charges for shopping bags

Plans have recently been revealed which would levy a charge on carrier bags used by shoppers in Scotland. Ministers are looking at charging five pence for each bag used by shoppers, in an attempt to decrease the number of bags used. All carrier bags used in supermarkets, local stores, department stores and petrol stations would be charged for under the latest plans. (more…)

Record keeping apps to be launched by HMRC

HM Revenue & Customs is to launch various mobile apps to help small businesses keep accurate records. The apps will be produced by HMRC together with the Business Application Software Developer Association. The aim of HMRC is to make it easier for small businesses which have turnover below the current threshold for VAT to keep accurate records in a timely manner. (more…)

HMRC confirms guidance change for salary sacrifice

Economy would gain £19bn by scrapping bank holidays

According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research, bank holidays cost the UK economy £19 billion a year, with each individual bank holiday costing the economy £2.3 billion. The CEBR believe that the close proximity of some bank holidays reduces momentum of businesses and ultimately a reduction in output. (more…)

Survey reveals online retailers are leading the way to recovery

Retailers with an online presence are outperforming high street stores which rely on footfall, according to a recent survey by BDO, an accountancy and business advisory company. The new BDO report uses data from the published accounts of the largest companies in the Top 150 for Yorkshire to produce a report of the region’s economic health. The Yorkshire Report 2012 is based on revenue of companies. (more…)

Early preparation for RTI recommended

Employers are being advised to start preparations for the Real Time Information system well in advance of the incorporation date. Although all employers will be required to use the new system by October 2013, the roll out system may mean that an employer is enrolled in the RTI system as soon as April 2013. (more…)

HMRC introduce new measures for tax fraud

Following criticism for the way HM Revenue & Customs has dealt with cases of tax fraud in the past, new tough measures have been introduced. The new procedures will largely be aimed at the worst offenders, with a guarantee to avoid facing prosecution if they are honest about any tax fraud and give details. The tougher measures also pledge to take more of the most serious offenders to court. (more…)
