Extension of filing deadline confirmed by HMRC

The online filing deadline has hit potential problems as staff at HM Revenue & Customs plan a one day strike tomorrow, 31st January 2012. As minimal numbers of advisors will be available to answer calls from taxpayers with paperwork queries, HMRC has agreed not to issue the £100 instant penalty charge for self assessment tax returns filed up to the 2nd February 2012.

Increased number of SMEs don’t have sufficient business insurance

According to the latest survey results from Aviva, a fifth of the 500 SMEs questioned don’t have business insurance. SME Pulse survey is conducted twice a year by Aviva, and revealed that the number of businesses without insurance has risen to 20 percent in December 2011, from the previous figure of eight percent in June the same year. New initiative to tackle tax fraud

Tribunal decision challenged by HMRC

HM Revenue & Customs are to challenge a ruling made by a tribunal with regard to the issuing of penalties. The original decision was made in favour of the claimant, Hok Ltd as the tribunal believed that the claimant acted in good faith and HMRC acted unfairly.
