The new Agency Workers Regulations are due to come into force on 1st October 2011, aimed at giving agency workers the same basic rights in employment as a permanent employee. Any employer who doesn’t abide by the new regulations will face a fine of up to £5000. Agency workers, under the new rules will have to complete a period of 12 weeks before being eligible to the same basic pay and other benefits, including annual leave. (more…)

Business Record Checks cause doubt among tax professionals

HM Revenue & Customs has decided to forge ahead with its plans to check the records of small businesses, although has announced plans to scale down the number from 50,000 to 20,000. The number of tax officers working on the Business Record Checks will be increased from 30 to 120. Tax advisors have significant concerns over the way that the initiative will be implemented, although tax professionals agree that accurate record keeping is necessary to pay the correct tax amount. Threat of large fines as deadline looms

People who fail to submit their completed self assessment tax return before the deadline could be facing new, stiffer penalties from HM Revenue & Customs. Paper tax returns have to be submitted and received by HMRC on or before 31st October. Failure to do so will incur a fixed penalty of £100. However, you still have the opportunity to file your tax return online before 31st January. (more…)

The United Kingdom’s wealthiest people face a crackdown by HM Revenue & Customs, who have over 2,000 tax inspectors dedicated to the task. Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander spoke at the Liberal Democrat conference to confirm that measures would be taken to ensure that the highest earners paid their taxes due. (more…)

A “Business Cost Index” which has been created by the Centre for Economic and Business Research and Make it Cheaper, has revealed which areas of the United Kingdom are the most expensive and the cheapest for businesses. Unsurprisingly, London was revealed as the most expensive area to run a business. Wales was revealed as the cheapest area of the UK to run a business. (more…)
Confidence of SMEs responsible for UK growth

According to a survey carried out by ECI Partners, a private equity company, SMEs are confident that the coming year will be a success for small business. Half of the 246 businesses which were interviewed for the survey expect their profit to increase by more than 16 percent. (more…)
Businesses warned about unfair penalties from HMRC

A recent case from a tax tribunal has caused concern among tax advisers. The case of Hok Ltd versus HM Revenue & Customs has raised the issue of penalties and the amount of time it should take before you receive them. In the case of Hok Ltd v HMRC, the employer mistakenly believed he wouldn’t have to file a form P35 as his only employee had already left his company. However, this is not the case and HMRC issued a penalty, four months later than the filing deadline. (more…)
2020 Vision report forecasts increase in UK SMEs

Predictions made by the Cabinet Office ten years ago have turned out to be fairly accurate, according to the 2020 Vision – The Future of Business report. The futurology report was launched recently by Bibby financial services. The predictions include the increased outsourcing of services in the public sector, growth of online business and increased numbers of people aged over 50 needing a second career. (more…)
Humberside company provides fund for small businesses

A £300,000 fund has been set up by a Hull based telecommunications firm in order to help small businesses who may be finding it hard to obtain finance. Survey fuels fears of double-dip recession

Results of the Markit/Cips services purchasing managers’ index have fuelled fears of a double-dip recession. Growth in the United Kingdom service sector dropped during August, dipping to 51.1 against the July result of 55.4. Growth is indicated by a figure over 50. The survey results suggest that the fall was the largest in more than 10 years. (more…)
