Small businesses missing out on benefits of social media

According to a survey carried out by IFF Research, just 25 businesses out of the 500 surveyed were taking advantage of the benefits of social networking and using Facebook, the social media website. In general, small businesses tended not to use social media as part of their marketing strategy. The survey revealed that 18 percent generated sales using LinkedIn, although only three percent were maximising the benefits. (more…)

Reminders issued for filing deadline

HM Revenue & Customs have issued the latest agent update, to remind them of important changes to the filing of self assessment tax returns. The deadline for filing a paper tax return is 31st October, which is fast approaching. Any return which is received by HMRC after the deadline, will be fined an instant £100 penalty. Even if the tax due is fully paid by 31st January 2012 or there is no liability, the penalty will still be charged. (more…)

Red tape still a huge burden on small business

According to a survey compiled by the Forum of Private Business, companies in the United Kingdom spend up to £14,200 each to deal with the burden of red tape. Rules and regulations announced by the government appear to be more complex than ever, despite a pledge by the coalition government to eradicate excessive red tape. (more…)

Plumbers arrested during investigations by HMRC

Following a tax amnesty launched by HMRC in March 2011, five arrests have been made, following investigations by HM Revenue & Customs. Letters had been issued to approximately 50,000 people who are in the plumbing industry, warning them to come forward and pay any tax that was due on undisclosed income. If plumbers came forward to make a full declaration of any previously unannounced income, they would only face fines of up to 20 percent of the total tax owed. (more…)

Business lending targets are met by UK banks

According to recent statistics from the Bank of England, the main five banks in the United Kingdom are back on track to meet government targets. Lending rose in the last quarter to £53 billion from £47.3 billion in the first three months of the year. Small and Medium Enterprise also benefited from increased lending levels, which rose by 22 percent. (more…)

Government measures following riots welcomed by small businesses

A number of measures which have been put in place by the government following the riots last week, are being welcomed by the Federation of Small Businesses. Among the measures which have been announced to help businesses who were affected by the rioting, is a £20 million fund to help businesses who weren’t covered by insurance and small businesses.
